Today, Randy Boyd, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, presented Melissa Nelson with $10,000 from the Knoxville Area Urban League.

Theotis Robinson Jr., one of the first students to desegregate the University of Tennessee – and who would later become a UT vice president – received the prestigious Whitney M. Young Jr. Lifetime Achievement award at the Knoxville Area Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Awards Gala on Oct. 22 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

On the first Saturday of each month, the Knoxville Area Urban League’s housing program offers education and counseling services that support individuals and families looking to purchase a home. The next homebuyer education class is Saturday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thanks to the efforts of the Knoxville Area Urban League and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, more than 1,200 children received new tennis shoes and school supplies on Saturday at the 13th annual “Shoes for School.”

Phyllis Y. Nichols, leader of the Knoxville Area Urban League, has received the Beal Bourne Business Image Award, which is presented each year to an honoree who helps support minority business owners.

Today, Pinnacle Financial Partners invested $1 million in the Knoxville Area Urban League’s lending program that will be used to make loans and fund businesses and, in turn, create jobs and opportunities for residents in economically disadvantaged communities.

Knoxville Area Urban League today received a $25,000 contribution to assist with its workforce development and employment assistance program. The grant – which was given to the non-profit organization through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program – will work to provide job skill assessments and training to prepare Knoxville-area residents for customer service and retail jobs in their areas of interest.

The Knoxville Area Urban League, with the City of Knoxville, announced today its new community development financial institution (CDFI) certification at its annual membership meeting at the Holiday Inn at World’s Fair Park.
