The physicians at Gastrointestinal Associates are marking Celiac Awareness Month by taking the opportunity to remind patients that self-diagnosis of celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive disease, is not only ill-advised but can also be dangerous.

Early morning activity is commonplace on weekdays at Gastrointestinal Associates’ Weisgarber Road office because people who have fasted for screening tests want to get them finished as soon as possible. However, GIA was a beehive of activity Saturday before dawn as a group of about 50 people who also had been fasting arrived for a health screening – one that could ultimately save their lives.

Dr. Johnny Altawil has joined Gastrointestinal Associates, increasing to 13 the number of gastroenterologists caring for patients at the leading Knoxville GI practice.

Gastrointestinal Associates, in partnership with Knoxville author and celiac disease expert Janet McKenzie Prince, will present two free, public workshops to help people who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity understand their condition and learn how to shop, prepare healthy meals and dine out in restaurants. The workshop, “Living Well Gluten Free,” will be held twice, once in September and once in October.

More than 200 physicians specializing in gastroenterology gathered in Boston over St. Patrick’s Day weekend for the third annual GI Roundtable, which was co-founded by Knoxville’s Dr. Bergein “Gene” Overholt of Gastrointestinal Associates.
