More than 400 Lonsdale Elementary School students are a little warmer this winter, thanks to the annual Mitten Tree event sponsored by steel recycler Gerdau.

Elementary school-aged children in Lonsdale Homes will have free computer and Internet access and tutoring at the new Community Technology Center thanks to the Lonsdale Homes Resident Association, Gerdau and Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation.

Gerdau recently donated $2,000 to support the YWCA Knoxville Victim Advocacy Program, which provides lifesaving services for victims of domestic violence through advocacy, innovative programming and community outreach and education.

On Tuesday, May 20, steel recycler Gerdau presented new bicycles and safety helmets to 12 Lonsdale Elementary School students – a girl and a boy from each grade – in recognition of their outstanding attendance during the 2013-14 school year.

Six sculptures created by University of Tennessee art students and incorporating scrap materials provided by steel recycler Gerdau were unveiled April 29.

Gerdau recently named Tim Perry 2013 Employee of the Year for its Knoxville mill. Perry, a crane operator, was nominated by coworkers and selected by administration in recognition of his excellent work ethic and positive attitude.

Gerdau employees recently purchased and packed 30 boxes of food, each containing a complete Thanksgiving meal large enough to feed up to six people, in support of Knox Area Rescue Ministries’ “Baskets of Hope” community food giveaway initiative. Gerdau’s Knoxville plant has again earned the ISO 14001 certification, an international distinction that recognizes the mill’s environmental management system. The plant first pursued and achieved this voluntary certification in 2007. Its 2013 certification recently became official.

Employees from Gerdau’s Knoxville steel mill were out in force to participate for Knox Area Rescue Ministries’ 11th annual Dragon Boat Festival on June 22 at Concord Park. Donations from Gerdau to the organization totaled nearly $1,800.

Gerdau recently awarded local high school student Adelyn Bryson a $10,000 scholarship to attend Maryville College this fall. She is the daughter of James “Woody” Bryson, a 10-year Gerdau employee who works in the factory’s rolling mill.
