Voting begins in U.S. Cellular’s fifth annual Black History Month Art Contest

Feb. 07, 2020

U.S. Cellular announced February 6 that the top 10 drawings in the company’s fifth annual Black History Month Art Competition with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley are now on display in local retail stores. The public is encouraged to visit select local U.S. Cellular stores to vote on their favorite piece of artwork.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley members display their original artwork, created in recognition of influential African Americans, for the fifth annual U.S. Cellular Black History Month Art Contest.

In January, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley members created original 8.5 x 11 pieces of artwork in recognition of influential African-Americans, including business people, athletes, historical figures and celebrities. The 10 finalists’ artwork were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club and local U.S. Cellular leaders based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. The artwork is now on display in select U.S. Cellular stores until Feb 29 and anyone 18 and older can visit a store to vote for their favorite. The top three vote-getters will be announced in March and prizes include gift cards in the following amounts:

  • $250 for 1st Place
  • $150 for 2nd Place
  • $100 for 3rd Place

“The artwork that the talented children from the Boys & Girls Club created is truly inspiring and is something we are greatly honored to host in our stores,” said Nathan Waddell, U.S. Cellular’s director of sales for East Tennessee. “This is a program that we look forward to all year and it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Black History Month and the diversity of this country.”

Last year’s 1st prize winner of the annual Black History Month Art Competition with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley was Aaron Black of the Regal Teen Center club, for his “Living Legends” collage.
