Jun. 18, 2019

Regionally accredited institution offers two new dental programs, provides community dental services

South College in Nashville has launched two new programs in its Department of Dental Education and opened a dental clinic offering services to the public.

As part of a major renovation, the South College Nashville campus installed a dental clinic with state-of-the-art equipment to provide classroom learning labs for students and offer community dental services.

The addition is part of South College’s commitment to offer academic programs for in-demand careers in health care and other fields. Students will earn an Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene or a certificate in Dental Assisting upon successful completion of required courses. Applications are now being accepted for both programs.

“Offering programs in areas with strong projected growth is one strategic way we create opportunities for success for our students,” said Nick South, president of South College in Nashville. “We look at market needs, identify potential programs that are within our areas of expertise, and then design programs with the potential to lead to fulfilling careers for graduates. Our clinic also provides a way to give back to the community by providing reduced rate services to the underserved in surrounding areas.”

Through a partnership with Rutherford County Schools, the South College Nashville dental clinic will provide reduced-rate services to students, parents, and faculty from Rutherford County. Services also will be available to the public, including cleanings, exams, X-rays, bleaching, and more.

South College is centrally located in the heart of the medical community in Nashville, which is becoming known as the health care management capital of the United States. The 75,000-square-foot campus building at 616 Marriott Drive is conveniently located just north of Interstate 40 and has on-site parking.

The South College Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs have been granted “Initial Accreditation” by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

In addition to the new dental assisting and dental hygiene career tracks, South College also offers degrees and programs in multiple health care fields, including occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant, nursing, diagnostic medical sonography/ultrasound, health science (pre-pharmacy or pre-nursing), radiography and more.

Students receive classroom instruction from top-notch faculty members in health care fields and hands-on learning with state-of-the-art equipment in immersive laboratories.

“I continue to be overwhelmed with the commitment the school is making to these dental programs as evidenced by the investment in technology and equipment, preparing our students for their future careers and offering exceptional service to our patients,” said Dr. Denise Terese-Koch, chair of the Department of Dental Education. “Our dental faculty will provide students with a combined 245 years of dental experience, and our clinic will allow us to turn out competent entry-level dental assistants and dental hygienists.”

South College staff can provide information about financial aid eligibility, including Tennessee Promise, Tennessee Reconnect, Tennessee HOPE Scholarship, and other grants and scholarships.

In addition, the South College Military Grant program provides tuition benefits to veterans and spouses of veterans with honorable discharge status; active duty military and spouses; and dependents who are eligible for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits. South College also has earned the Military Friendly® School and Military Friendly Spouse School designation.
