South College Nashville launches occupational therapy assistant program

January 7, 2019

Regionally accredited higher education institution continues to expand health care programs

South College in Nashville has launched an occupational therapy assistant program and is now admitting students for enrollment in the spring of 2019.

The addition is part of South College’s commitment to offer academic programs and degrees for in-demand careers in health care and other fields. Students will earn an Associate of Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant upon successful completion of required courses. This is the second new health care program launch in Nashville since November, when South College added a certificate program for licensed practical nurse (LPN).

“We take a strategic approach to our course and program offerings,” said Nick South, campus president of South College in Nashville. “Nashville is a growing market across multiple fields and industries – and health care, in particular – so we identify the programs that meet the needs of medical facilities and businesses in Nashville with the potential to lead to fulfilling careers for our graduates.”

South College’s Nashville campus, located at 616 Marriott Drive just north of Interstate 40, has launched an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program and is now admitting students for enrollment in the spring of 2019.

South College is centrally located in the heart of the medical community in Nashville, which is becoming known as the health care management capital of the United States. The 48,000-square-foot campus building at 616 Marriott Drive is conveniently located just north of Interstate 40 with on-site parking.

The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) granted candidacy status for the new occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program, which allows the Nashville campus to start enrolling OTA students and proceed to the pre-accreditation review step of the full accreditation process, which would be completed in 2020.

Positive factors that ACOTE cited when making the decision included the updated instructional facilities with supportive budget and institutional support; central location and robust health care community; communication and mentorship with OTA faculty and staff at South College campuses in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina; ability to hire well-qualified faculty with expertise in the field; and eligibility for Tennessee Promise and the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship at South College.

In addition to the new occupational therapy assistant and LPN career tracks, South College also offers degrees and programs in multiple health care fields, including physical therapist assistant, nursing, diagnostic medical sonography/ultrasound, health science (pre-pharmacy or pre-nursing), radiography, physician assistant and more.

Students receive classroom instruction from top-notch faculty members in health care fields and hands-on learning with state-of-the-art equipment in immersive laboratories.

“We offer degrees in careers that are growing and sought after by employers in our community,” South said. “We focus on making sure our graduates are prepared to enter the workforce and make a difference.”

South College staff can provide information about financial aid eligibility, including Tennessee Promise, Tennessee Reconnect, Tennessee HOPE Scholarship and other grants and scholarships.

In addition, the South College Military Grant program provides tuition benefits to veterans and spouses of veterans with honorable discharge status; active duty military and spouses; and dependents who are eligible for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits. South College also has earned the Military Friendly® School designation.
