South College Nashville conducted an emergency drill designed to simulate a medical response to an explosion in a chemical lab to offer students experience responding to a mass casualty event, including evaluating and triaging injured patients and working together among various disciplines.

“We pride ourselves on offering comprehensive educational opportunities for students, including simulations that help prepare them to respond effectively in a real medical emergency,” said Nick South, campus president for South College Nashville. “By involving our healthcare programs, including nursing, medical assisting and physician assistant, students gain an understanding of how to work together efficiently when time is of the essence.”

The Oct. 24 on-campus exercise started with a simulated chemical explosion in a lab. Students followed protocols by “calling” 911 and then establishing a triage area to prioritize patients by the severity of injury. Then, students from different disciplines worked together to coordinate treatment plans.

“The simulation allowed our students to react to a mass casualty situation and be prepared if an actual emergency ever occurred,” South said. “The students also learned the full spectrum of care needed to prioritize care and quickly coordinate treatment.”
