South College Knoxville launches two new medical imaging pathways in vascular imaging and nuclear medicine

Nov. 03, 2026

South College will offer two new medical imaging pathways launching a new concentration in vascular imaging in its AS Diagnostic Medical Imaging program and an AS pathway in Nuclear Medicine program at its Knoxville campus.

South College Knoxville launches two new medical imaging pathways in vascular imaging and nuclear medicine.

Classes began in October for the new Associate of Science pathways. Prospective students interested in either program may apply for the next cohort or begin prerequisite courses now.

“Healthcare remains a growing sector of the workforce in Tennessee and across the region,” said Neil Heatherly, president of the Knoxville campus. “Both pathways are in-demand by healthcare facilities that need graduates prepared for entry-level opportunities. The curriculum also provides a foundation for advanced professional opportunities with additional education.”

Nuclear medicine technologists prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals, then use specialized equipment to track them in the body and produce diagnostic images. The program is designed to develop skills in imaging science and patient care, diagnostic procedures, nuclear medicine technology, radiopharmacy and radionuclide therapy, and professional communication.

The AS in Nuclear Medicine program is available as a hybrid pathway, which includes online courses with problem-based learning, videos, faculty-led discussions and assignments, as well as in-person supervised lab and clinical instruction.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), careers as a nuclear medicine technologist are expected to grow by 9% across the country from 2024 to 2034 with median pay at $97,020 per year or $46.64 per hour for two-year degree.

Students in the DMS vascular imaging concentration will develop skills in vascular sonography to examine blood vessels and detect blockages or clots. Sonographers perform scans, analyze images for abnormalities, communicate findings to interpreting physicians and maintain patient records.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), careers as a vascular imaging technologist, a specialized diagnostic medical sonographer, are expected to grow by 13% across the country from 2024 to 2034 with median pay at $89,340 per year or $42.95 per hour for a two-year degree.

The addition of a vascular concentration marks a fourth focus option within the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, which also includes pathways in abdominal-extended, obstetrics and gynecology, and adult echocardiology.
