South College, which has demonstrated its commitment to those who serve our country, once again has earned the Military Friendly® School designation for 2018-2019.
“It is a priority for us to not only earn, but also to demonstrate our commitment to fulfilling this distinction,” said Steve South, chancellor of South College. “Veterans and the men and women who are serving our country as active duty military members deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. We are honored to have military members enroll in our college.”
South College, which first earned the Military Friendly® School designation in 2016, has been a longtime advocate for veterans and supporter of the U.S. military. The South College Military Grant program provides tuition benefits to veterans and spouses of veterans with honorable discharge status; active duty military and spouses; and dependents who are eligible for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits.
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), South College offers programs at the doctorate, educational specialist, master’s, baccalaureate, and associate levels. South College, which is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, also has campuses in Nashville, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina, and offers online classes and programs.
Schools that are designated as a Military Friendly® School are evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. This year for the first time, student survey data was taken into consideration. South College is one of 941 schools across the country that earned the designation.
“We welcome the chance to offer opportunities to veterans and military members for higher education, tuition assistance and career advancement,” South said. “Receiving Military Friendly® School status is something that we do not take for granted, and we work every day to earn and keep that designation.”
Victory Media determined the designated schools with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Among the criteria were the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and specifically student veterans.
“Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to colleges creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to invest in programs to provide educational outcomes that are better for veterans,” said Daniel Nichols, chief product officer for Victory Media.
In addition to veteran and military assistance, South College offers financial aid eligibility through Tennessee Promise, Tennessee Reconnect, Tennessee HOPE Scholarship, South College Promise and other grants and scholarships.

The survey questions, methodology, criteria and weighting were developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers.
