National Self-Improvement Month provides new chance for change

Aug. 30, 2019

What happened to those New Year’s resolutions? The lofty goals that were set on New Year’s Eve to get in shape or quit a bad habit don’t have to be left behind. September is National Self-Improvement Month, which means it’s a great time to reevaluate those goals and make positive changes. And technology can help. Smartphones, like the iPhone X or Google Pixel 3, can help you get started and track positive life changes. In fact, 54% of users in U.S. Cellular’s annual survey say that smartphones enhance their lives.*

“While we all try to find balance in our life, technology tools like a smartphone can help keep us on track to make good on our goals,” states Nathan Waddell, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in East Tennessee. “Booking some well-deserved ‘me time’ sets us up as a priority in our own lives and give us the ability to accomplish goals. Otherwise, we tend to fill the free time with school, work, family, errands – things that all feel more important than making time for self-improvement.”

U.S. Cellular suggests the following tips to help those looking to make positive changes in their lives by using a smartphone during National Self-Improvement Month:

  • Fuel Your Passion: With U.S. Cellular’s nationwide network, the internet is at your disposal anywhere, anytime, making it easy to learn something new. If you want to pursue that degree you’ve been planning to get many colleges and universities offer online courses. If you’re looking to teach yourself to learn how to play the piano, speak a new language or fix your bike, YouTube offers tutorials for many interests.
  • Take the Challenge: If your goal is to read more or get into shape, your smartphone can help you stay on track. Even if you don’t have a lot of time in your day to add a new “to do,” having a smartphone can help you maximize any downtime. With apps like Amazon Kindle (available on iTunes and Google Play) and Apple Books, waiting for the bus or an appointment doesn’t have to be time wasted. Smartphone users can pick up their devices and have thousands of books at their fingertips. Don’t have time to get to the gym? Apps like J&J Official 7 Minute Workout (available on iTunes and Google Play) can help keep you moving even on those busy days at work.
  • Reconnect with Loved Ones: The U.S. Cellular survey showed that 55% of smartphone owners could not stay in touch with family and friends without their smartphones.* Social media sites are helpful to keep tabs on friends’ lives, but consider using your smartphone to give them a call. Or, what about using FaceTime or Google Hangouts for a video chat? It’s always good to hear a person’s voice and even better to see their smiling face.
  • Better Your Community: U.S. Cellular has a long-term commitment to the communities it serves. In 2018, U.S. Cellular associates volunteered at more than 200 events and are committed to volunteering 35,000 hours in its local communities again in 2019. Cleaning up a park, volunteering at the local library or your child’s school, or helping raise money for the local homeless shelter – there are countless opportunities in every community to get involved. Find something you’re passionate about and give back. Websites like Create the Good can connect users to various types of volunteer opportunities or visit Boys & Girls Club of America and United Way to find local opportunities.

U.S. Cellular encourages smartphone users to stop by a local store to speak with the wireless company’s knowledgeable associates for advice on how technology and U.S Cellular’s nationwide coverage can help make positive change during National Self-Improvement Month.

*Between Nov. 14-27, 2018, a total of 1,012 online interviews were conducted among a nationally representative sample of U.S. consumers between 18-38 years old by Consumer Insights, in partnership with Maritz CX.
