KSO to perform free concert May 10 on Market Square

Apr. 23, 2018

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform a free, family-friendly concert on Market Square in downtown Knoxville on Thursday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by Home Federal Bank, this concert is open to the public, and no tickets are required.

The KSO’s Symphony on the Square will kick off the City of Knoxville’s Concerts on the Square Series and is offered as part of the KSO Education & Community Partnerships initiative. By performing a free concert, the Knoxville Symphony provides the community exposure to classical music and showcases the talented musicians living in Knoxville.

“One of our goals at the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is for all East Tennesseans to have access to great symphonic music,” Music Director Aram Demirjian said. “We take joy in presenting free concerts in the community as one way of saying thank you for the support throughout the year. I hope we see people of all ages in the audience, particularly families, as this is always lighthearted, enjoyable music.”

Patrons are encouraged to arrive early and bring blankets and/or chairs to enjoy the popular concert. Concertgoers also can bring picnic dinners or pick up food at one of the many downtown restaurants. Parking is free for those arriving after 6 p.m. in the city-owned Market Square, Walnut Street, Locust Street and State Street garages. The event kicks off the City of Knoxville’s Concerts on the Square series, which includes free concerts on Market Square. Jazz Tuesdays run May 8-Aug. 28, and Variety Thursdays run May 10-June 28. The full schedule of city concerts is available here.

Demirjian will lead the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra in a concert of light pops, including timeless music of the stage and screen including “Waltz” from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty; a tribute to Broadway composers Lerner and Loewe; and music from the films Chicago and the more recent La La Land.

The May 10 concert will take place at Bill Lyons Pavilion on Market Square. In case of inclement weather and/or cold temperatures, the concert will be held at the nearby Bijou Theatre, 803 S. Gay St.
