Approximately 4,050 people attended the Knoxville’s Area Urban League’s 23rd annual Shoes for School, which provides new shoes and school supplies for children and connects families with community resources. A total of 1,200 pairs of shoes were distributed to students, and the organization estimated that more than 1,500 children stocked up on school supplies.
The annual celebration by the Knoxville Area Urban League (KAUL) marks the start of the new school year; Knox County students return to classrooms on Thursday, Aug. 7. Shoes for School, which was held at Covenant Health Park, was supported by co-presenting sponsors Knoxville Utilities Board and Institute of Real Estate Management for the event..

“Year after year, we aim to expand our reach and empower even more youth in our community,” said Carly Hammonds, director of education and youth services for KAUL. “Seeing the excitement on kids’ faces while they receive new shoes and supplies, plus being excited to be at the new Covenant Health Park, was incredible. It’s events like this that remind us how community support, reliable resources and encouragement impact a child’s growth and confidence.”
Nearly 42 booths representing businesses, nonprofits, government entities and other organizations distributed free school supplies and services. Attendees also enjoyed games, inflatables and music.
The impact of Shoes for School goes beyond back-to-school basics. When students are prepared for school, they have a sense of stability, and their self-esteem is boosted. Confidence in the classroom helps children relate to their peers, encourages them to speak up and allows them to perform their best. The Knoxville Area Urban League believes that Shoes for School, added to its support services offered year-round, equals greater opportunities later in life.
“This event isn’t just about new shoes, it’s also about removing financial burdens for families so their students can thrive from day one with school supplies and confidence,” Hammonds said.
The Knoxville Area Urban League advances education, entrepreneurship, health, housing, jobs and justice. The organization is a non-profit, non-partisan, interracial coalition, serving a diverse client base in Knox, Blount and Anderson counties.
