Bank donates $2,500 to Knoxville Museum of Art in Peters’ name
Home Federal Bank named Sylvia Peters a 2015 Hometown Hero and presented a $2,500 donation in her honor to Knoxville Museum of Art at a ceremony at the bank’s downtown Knoxville headquarters, 515 Market Street, on Thursday, April 23.
Home Federal Bank’s Hometown Heroes community service awards program spotlights community volunteers who make East Tennessee a more comfortable place for all of us. They mentor our kids; support our seniors; advocate for our most vulnerable; care for our animals; expand our region’s cultural opportunities; and serve in other ways. Eight 2015 honorees were selected for their extraordinary volunteer efforts based on nominations from area nonprofits and the general public.
The honorees, chosen based on their volunteer work in our community, selected a local nonprofit for a $2,500 donation in their names. From these finalists, an overall honoree will have an additional $2,500 donation to his or her chosen nonprofit.
“This is the fifth year of the Hometown Heroes program, and each year I gain a renewed appreciation for our community’s volunteers,” Home Federal Bank President and CEO Dale Keasling said. “People like Sylvia, through her faithful volunteer work with the Knoxville Museum of Art that enriches the lives of children and adults in our community, exemplify what it means to be a Hometown Hero.”
Peters has invested the past 20 years working in support of the Knoxville Museum of Art. She currently serves as president of the KMA Guild, and over the years has led many of the Guild’s fundraising events. Peters also is a visionary. In 2014, she launched Art Fair KMA, which drew more than 2,000 visitors. She also worked directly with regional schools to launch “Pottery with a Purpose,” a project that included 450 area children who designed and created plates to be auctioned in support of KMA. Inspired by the pottery, a local donor provided funds to purchase a pottery kiln that now can be used to offer pottery courses during the museum’s Summer Art Academy.
“Hometown Heroes affords us the opportunity to recognize some commendable individuals,” Keasling said. “At the same time, the program also allows us to financially support many area nonprofits that do a lot of important work in our community.”
Knoxville Museum of Art Executive Director David Butler accepted the donation. Founded as the Dulin Gallery of Art in 1961, the Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life.
