Funds will support YWCA Victim Advocacy Program
Gerdau recently donated $2,000 to support the YWCA Knoxville Victim Advocacy Program, which provides lifesaving services for victims of domestic violence through advocacy, innovative programming and community outreach and education.
“We have learned that in 2012 alone the Knoxville Police Department and Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to 18,796 calls related to domestic violence, this is the equivalent of one call every 28 minutes,” said Gerdau Vice President and General Manager Johnny Miller. “Gerdau is glad to have this opportunity to support the YWCA’s important work to stop domestic violence in our community and help these victims that have suffered from this type of abuse.”
The Victim Advocacy Program serves more than 3,300 clients each year. Through the program, the YWCA provides services such as observing court proceedings; educating the community on the dynamics of domestic violence; and helping victims understand their rights, navigate the legal system and apply for orders of protection.
“We are most grateful for Gerdau’s kindness and generosity and the connections we have made though them,” said YWCA Knoxville CEO Marigail Mullin. “These connections have resulted in valuable volunteers as well as the opportunity to educate others on the warning signs leading to abusive relationships and how to access help for victims though the YWCA.”
This donation supports Gerdau’s robust social responsibility program that focuses on providing community support in the locations where it operates.
