Alan Carmichael, who serves as a strategic consultant for Moxley Carmichael, has 50 years of real-world experience. He helped clients communicate effectively in his former role as president of Moxley Carmichael. From a love of literature and writing, he crafted careers first in journalism and then public relations. The ability to create and execute up-to-date communications strategies was based on firsthand experience in advising clients on proactive public relations programs, as well as preparing for and managing crises.

Alan advised such national clients as Pilot Flying J and U.S. Cellular, as well as regional market leaders Covenant Health, Summit Medical Group, Knoxville Utilities Board and the Tennessee Theatre, among others.

Because he is strongly connected to the community, Alan often advised clients and new companies to the region on their plans for local involvement. He lives and works in downtown Knoxville and is a former board member of the Central Business Improvement District. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Alan serves on the Board of Visitors of the College of Communication & Information.

He is a year 2000 Leadership Knoxville graduate and currently serves on the Leadership Knoxville board. He is a member of the boards of Blount Mansion and the Community School of the Arts. He is the former vice president of the board of the Alzheimer’s Association in Knoxville and also previously served on the boards of Ijams Nature Center, the Dogwood Arts Festival, the Knoxville Arts Council and the City Ballet.

Before joining Moxley Carmichael in 1999, Alan was senior vice president of communications at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the country’s largest power producer. Under his leadership, TVA communications employees won numerous national awards. Alan led the award-winning team that communicated a decade of stable electric rates at TVA and managed TVA’s first-ever, seven-state advertising campaign. Prior to TVA, Alan was a reporter, Washington correspondent and assistant city editor at The Tennessean in Nashville.

Alan’s industry associations have kept him abreast of state-of-the-art public relations and social media practices. He is a past president and member of the board of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), winning the Harvey I. Cobert Award from the regional chapter for contributions to the growth of the profession. He is a member of PRSA’s Counselors Academy, made up of independent PR agency leaders across North America. He was named the 2018 Outstanding Marketing Professional by the American Marketing Association Knoxville.

Alan is married to Cynthia Moxley, and their calico cat Rexie is mainly responsible for their deep concern for animal welfare.
