Centerpiece of $1.4 million campus enhancement provides expanded wellness and fitness center
Today, Asbury Place Kingsport celebrated the opening of its new clubhouse, the centerpiece of a $1.4 million campus enhancement.
The clubhouse features a bright and open gathering space to encourage resident interaction and an entire floor dedicated to an expanded wellness and fitness center.
“We are delighted to celebrate the opening of our clubhouse,” said Sandra Brown, executive director of the Kingsport campus. “As functional as it is beautiful, this building will further enhance the sense of community at Asbury Place.”
Kingsport Mayor John Clark, who participated in the grand opening celebration, said the clubhouse will help encourage residents to lead healthy, active lifestyles. He also thanked Asbury Place for their continued investment in the well-being of the community’s older adults.
“This investment is not just in a building, it’s in an even greater sense of community for those who call Asbury home,” said Marjorie Shonnard, chief operating officer of Asbury Inc., nonprofit operator of Asbury Place continuing care retirement communities in Kingsport and Maryville. “It helps us even better fulfill our mission of meeting residents’ physical, intellectual, spiritual and social needs.”

The clubhouse, featuring both community and wellness space, is the centerpiece of $1.4 million in enhancements at the Asbury Place Baysmont campus. Maggie Cooper, Asbury Place director of lifestyles and wellness, noted much excitement surrounding the opening, particularly among the residents who regularly participate in exercise classes. “Our regular exercise participants can’t wait to use the new space,” Cooper said. “Having a whole floor dedicated to fitness will enhance what we’ve already been doing and engage even more residents.”
Fitness classes include strength, balance and cardio, and yoga. Other classes target senior-specific areas such as fall prevention, brain health and memory enhancement.
The clubhouse opening doesn’t mark the end of upgrades at Asbury Place Kingsport. A renovated dining room and new gathering space will open in a few weeks. In July, the campus launched an additional $8 million in expansion and improvements, including renovations to its existing health care center and a new, long-term health care housing concept that will offer 22 resident rooms and family-style communal spaces.
