Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic (KOC) is now offering precise body composition scans that provide a detailed analysis of fat and muscle distribution throughout the body.
The noninvasive scans use Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) technology to measure and map muscle and fat by body region. This can help individuals track muscle gain and fat loss, provide a baseline for training and nutrition programs and identify potential health risks associated with excess visceral fat, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The self-pay scans take about five minutes and do not require a physician referral.
“DEXA body composition scans empower individuals with insights that go beyond the bathroom scale or Body Mass Index (BMI),” said Dr. Michael Kern, a sports medicine surgeon at Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic. “The scans include a review with a medical professional who will help interpret your results. Whether you want to improve your athletic performance or lose weight while preserving muscle mass, this is one of the most accurate and reliable tools available.”
During the scan, a participant lies flat while the scanner arm moves over the body. KOC’s Lunar DXA systems use low-dose X-ray technology to calculate fat, bone and lean tissue to map exactly where fat is distributed throughout the body.

Body composition analysis packages cost $225 and include a detailed report and provider review. The scans are available for individuals ages 20 and up at KOC University, located at 1600 Accelerator Way in Knoxville.
