South College will partner with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) to host a free Child Car Seat Safety event from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the institution’s Parkside campus, located at 400 Goody’s Drive.

South College’s School of Legal Studies and School of Education are participating in the event, designed to offer a free opportunity for parents and caregivers to ensure correct use and installation of child car seats.
“Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13 in the U.S. but many of these are preventable with the correct use of child car seats,” KCSO Lt. Debbie Carter said. “We want to offer a chance for all families to make sure their child’s car seat is properly installed and appropriate for their age and height without any fear of judgment or penalty.”
Certified Child Car Seat technicians from East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, KCSO, and Oak Ridge Police Department will offer free inspections, hands-on demos, and instructions for caregivers. KCSO’s SCAN volunteers and South College students and faculty will assist with coordination and education.
“South College is committed to being a good partner in the community,” said Neil Heatherly, Knoxville campus president. “We have a strong relationship with law enforcement through several of our education programs, but these events are about working together to serve the public, offer peace of mind and make Knoxville a safer place for families.”
Attendees should turn into the campus from Parkside Drive and follow directions through the parking lot on the left.
The event also offers the opportunity for families to learn about educational programs at South College.
